Smile, the 2022 horror hit that became the highest-grossing horror film of that year, will make its free streaming premiere on Pluto TV in September.
Per the official description, Smile stars Sosie Bacon as Dr. Rose Cotter, “who begins experiencing frightening occurrences she can’t explain after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.” Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin Stasey, Kal Penn and Rob Morgan also star.
Written and directed by Parker Finn in his feature directorial debut, Smile is based on his 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept. The film was originally set for a streaming release on Paramount+, but Paramount opted for a theatrical release after strong test screenings, according to Variety.
Smile opened at No. 1 domestically on a $17 million budget and went on to gross more than $217 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing horror film of 2022, according to Collider. Then-Paramount Pictures President and CEO Brian Robbins said at the time, “The spectacular worldwide performance of Smile demonstrates what is truly possible when you deliver a brilliantly sticky marketing campaign on top of a masterfully made high-concept horror film.”
The film spawned a sequel, Smile 2, with Naomi Scott’s performance as pop star Skye Riley earning significant awards attention. Scott won the Astra Award for Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller and received nominations for Best Actress at both the Critics’ Choice Super Awards and the Saturn Awards.
Director Parker Finn told The Hollywood Reporter that Scott’s performance deserved further recognition: “Naomi is an absolute powerhouse. She gives a tour-de-force performance in [Smile 2], and if I was on an awards committee, even unbiased, I would say she absolutely deserves consideration. So I hope that the industry starts recognizing that.”
