A24’s ‘Tony’ Gets A New First Look: Here’s Everything To Know About The Anthony Bourdain Origin Story

,

A24 has released a new behind-the-scenes first look at Tony, featuring director Matt Johnson alongside stars Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas ahead of the film’s August theatrical release. The film follows a pivotal summer in 1975 when a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain arrives in Provincetown, Massachusetts and stumbles into the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen, an experience Bourdain later credited as the turning point that shaped his entire life.

Johnson told Entertainment Weekly of what drew him to those chapters of Bourdain’s 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential, “Those two chapters read like ‘Genesis’ to me. So little happens, but the margins are packed. It meant the cast and I could investigate this man’s origin together, knowing only where he would end up 20 years later.” He added that the collaboration with Sessa began almost immediately: “I had lunch with Dominic in New York with my producer, and within an hour we were writing what would become the screenplay of the movie together.”
