Why Was ‘Spider-Noir’ Canceled After One Season?

,

Over the weekend, its was revealed Prime Video has opted not to move forward with a second season of Spider-Noir, the Nicolas Cage-led superhero series.

Deadline reported that Spider-Noir launched strongly, landing at No. 2 on Nielsen’s U.S. Top 10 for original series in its first week with 851 million minutes viewed, and generating 2.6 billion minutes viewed in the U.S. over its first six weeks, according to Nielsen Streaming Content Ratings. But per the outlet the show didn’t hold onto that momentum the way other recent Prime Video releases like Off Campus, Reacher and Ride Or Die did, and it dropped off the platform’s daily Top 10 rankings relatively quickly.

The report also notes that the show’s respectable but not blockbuster viewership, combined with a high production cost tied to filming both color and black-and-white versions, likely factored into the decision not to continue, since streamers typically weigh cost against performance when making renewal calls.

Spider-Noir was the first series to premiere under a multi-title deal between Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television built around Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. Deadline reports the collaboration is continuing regardless, with multiple other projects in development and one said to be nearing a series order.

How did ‘Spider-Noir’ perform critically?

The series landed 11 Emmy nominations, the most of any Prime Video series in 2026, per Deadline. Two days after the cancellation news broke, Spider-Noir won five Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Title Design, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Cinematography, Outstanding Special Visual Effects and Outstanding Stunt Coordination.

Supervising stunt coordinator Freddy Bouciegues and stunt coordinator Hugh Aodh O’Brien told Gold Derby after the win, “We got to do everything” they wanted on the series, joking, “Tell us who to call!” when asked whether the win might convince Prime Video to reconsider.

What is ‘Spider-Noir’ about?

Based on Marvel’s Spider-Man Noir comic, the series “follows Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.”

The cast also included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot served as co-showrunners and executive producers, developing the series alongside Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse team Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal.

What did Nicolas Cage say about the ‘Spider-Noir’ cancellation?

Cage said in a statement to Deadline, “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man. Onwards, upwards, inwards.” His reaction echoed comments he’d made around the show’s May premiere, when he told Variety, “whether it happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own.”
