Power Book III: Raising Kanan has revealed a major character twist in its fifth and final season on Starz, with Asjha Cooper, previously introduced as call girl Tiana, revealing her true identity as Jarita, Kanan Stark’s love interest and the future mother of his son Shawn. Longtime Power universe fans will recognize Jarita as a key figure in the franchise’s mythology.
Cooper will continue as a guest star throughout the remainder of Season 5 and has been confirmed as a series regular in Power: Origins, the upcoming prequel currently filming in New Jersey.
What is Jarita’s significance in the ‘Power’ universe?
Jarita is known to longtime Power fans as the mother of Shawn, Kanan’s son, making her introduction in Raising Kanan a significant moment for the franchise. Her reveal, having operated undercover as Tiana, surprised viewers who follow the broader Power mythology. Tasha Smith played the character in several episode of the original Power.
What happens in Season 5 of ‘Raising Kanan’?
According to the official description, Season 5 finds Kanan’s “relationship with Raq reaching a point of no return, and any chance of reconciliation becomes a distant memory, war is inevitable. Kanan solidifies his place in the Queens drug game alongside Breeze (Shameik Moore), the Southside legend, and their alliance sets the stage for a reckoning that will ripple through every player in this dangerous game.”
What is ‘Power: Origins’?
According to the official description, Power: Origins will explore “the action-packed origin story of fan-favorite characters Ghost, Tommy and Kanan as ambitious young entrepreneurs on the rise, determined to make their mark on the streets of New York City.” Cooper joins previously announced cast members Spence Moore as Ghost, Charlie Mann as Tommy, Zuri Reed as Tasha and Mekai Curtis reprising the role of Kanan. Season 1 will consist of 18 episodes.
Power: Origins marks the fourth spinoff in the Power universe, following Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book IV: Forceand the recently greenlit Power: Legacy with Joseph Sikora and Michael Rainey Jr. Sascha Penn serves as showrunner and executive producer on both Raising Kanan Season 5 and Power: Origins.
