Sony’s Screen Gems has landed Mime, a supernatural horror package starring John David Washington, beating out Amazon and Searchlight for the project, according to Deadline. Nikyatu Jusu, who won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for her debut feature Nanny, will direct.
What is ‘Mime’ about?
There’s no official logline yet, but Deadline reports the film is set in a New York City apartment complex during a heat wave blackout. Stephen Herman wrote the screenplay based on his own original idea. The project is in active development, with production intended to begin in the spring, per Deadline.
Matt Tolmach and Camilla Grove produce alongside Scott Derrickson under his Crooked Highway banner. Washington also produces. Screen Gems has a first-look deal with Derrickson.
Jusu’s Nanny starred Anna Diop as a Senegalese immigrant nanny in New York City and won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance in 2022, the first horror film to take the festival’s top honor. Prime Video acquired global rights to the film for $7 million out of Sundance.
