Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for I Play Rocky, the new film from Green Book director Peter Farrelly. The film arrives just in time for the 50th anniversary of Rocky, which was released Nov. 21, 1976.
Amazon MGM has positioned the film for awards season, with a likely world premiere at TIFF in September, per Gold Derby. Rocky will also be rereleased in theaters by Amazon MGM, Park Circus and Fathom Entertainment concurrent with I Play Rocky‘s premiere.
What is ‘I Play Rocky’ about?
According to the official description, “the film is an electrifying true story about an unknown actor with an unshakable belief that he wasn’t just meant to write Rocky — he was meant to be Rocky Balboa. Told ‘no’ at every turn, Sylvester Stallone bets everything on himself, holding the line on playing the lead against seemingly impossible odds.”
Who plays who in ‘I Play Rocky’?
Alongside Ippolito as Stallone, AnnaSophia Robb plays Stallone’s first wife Sasha Czack, Matt Dillon plays his father Frank Stallone Sr., Stephan James plays Carl Weathers, P.J. Byrne plays producer Irwin Winkler, Toby Kebbell plays producer Robert Chartoff, Jay Duplass plays Rocky director John G. Avildsen and Kiki Seto plays Talia Shire. Tracy Letts and Kiki Seto round out the ensemble.
Farrelly directs from a screenplay by Peter Gamble and produces alongside Christian Baha, Toby Emmerich and Paul Currie.
When does ‘I Play Rocky’ open in theaters?
I Play Rocky opens in select theaters Nov. 6, expanding wide later that month.
