Hulu has renewed Furious, the thriller series from creator and executive producer Elizabeth Meriwether and star and executive producer Emmy Rossum, for a second season. This news comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale.
The series has been gaining momentum, with viewership growing week over week, per Hulu. Views for Episode 7 were up 40% from the premiere, based on one-day views.
Per the official description, “‘Furious follows an FBI agent, Alice Black (Rossum) on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating female serial killer (Lola Petticrew). Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur.”
Meriwether previously told BLKCinema.com the series grew out of the 1987 film Black Widow before evolving into a story about two survivors of violence. “This story needs to be about two victims of violence and how they’ve taken their experience and gone in two really different directions with it,” she said, adding that she wanted Alice to also be “a victim of violence” as “a woman in law enforcement” navigating a justice system she’d seen fail women like her.
Rossum told us that Alice’s history with her ex-husband, Marshall (Jake Lacy), complicates her ability to seek justice for herself. “There’s a lot of shame about not having pursued justice for herself and also a lot of complicated feelings about her abuser because he wasn’t always just that,” she said, noting that Alice and Marshall share a 20-plus-year history that includes real love alongside “violence and control and oppression.”
Lacy said that Meriwether’s approach to Marshall pushed past familiar cop-show archetypes. “The reason that tropes of the bad boyfriend or the dirty cop exist is because they’re easy,” he said. “Each of these characters, without care and talent and some courage to investigate these characters fully, could just be two-dimensional kind of rote characters in a cop show.”

Rossum leads as Alice Black, alongside Petticrew, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Scoot McNairy and Lacy. Rob Delaney, Hope Davis, Rob Yang and Steve Way appear as guest stars.
Meriwether created, wrote and executive produces the series. Rossum executive produces for Composition 8, alongside Ronald Bass, Matt Olmstead and Sam Hoffman. Brian Kirk executive produced and directed Episodes 101 and 102. The series is produced by 20th Television and Searchlight Television.
