Universal’s Snoop Dogg biopic continues to fill out its cast, adding Lauren London as Beverly Tate, the rapper’s mother, and Camron Jones as Tupac Shakur. Deadline first reported London’s casting. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Jones’s. They join Jonathan Daviss as Snoop and Myles Bullock Be as Dr. Dre.
London plays Beverly Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, a church choir director, who Deadline reports, had a major impact on her son, Calvin Broadus, including inspiring his nickname. The casting marks a full-circle moment for London and Snoop Dogg, who worked together on music videos in the early 2000s, according to Deadline. The two also came together to honor London’s late partner, Nipsey Hussle, following his 2019 murder.
Jones will play Tupac Shakur, who was signed to Death Row Records alongside Snoop Dogg and collaborated with him on hits including “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet notes the two had a major falling out after Shakur pressured Snoop Dogg to take sides in the East Coast-West Coast rivalry. Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting in 1996.
Jones is best known for his role in Amazon Prime’s Panic, with additional credits on grown-ish, The Purge and Shameless. He’ll next appear in the upcoming third season of Starz’s P-Valley, per THR.
Craig Brewer directs from his rewrite of Joe Robert Cole’s original script. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker produce, alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum. Michael Beugg and Jeb Brody executive produce, with Ryan Jones and Tony Ducret overseeing the project for the studio. The film will incorporate music from Snoop Dogg’s catalog and marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment.
Snoop opens in theaters Aug. 6, 2027.
