Universal Pictures has set an Aug. 6, 2027 release date for Snoop, the authorized biopic of Calvin Broadus Jr, aka the iconic rapper Snoop Dogg.
Deadline was one of the first to report the news. Jonathan Daviss, best known for Outer Banks, stars in the titular role, with Craig Brewer directing from his rewrite of Joe Robert Cole’s original script.
The film follows Snoop’s rise as a hip-hop icon and will incorporate music from his vast catalog, per Deadline. Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment produces alongside Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. It marks the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment.
Snoop teased the film at CinemaCon earlier this year, saying, “After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn. My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline,’” per The Hollywood Reporter. He added, “My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission.”
The Aug. 6 date puts Snoop opposite Disney’s untitled Bluey movie and Black Bear’s Jason Statham Stole My Bike, per Deadline. Universal has had strong results with music biopics, recently having had international distribution on Michael, which crossed $1 billion globally, and previously had Straight Outta Compton ($201.6 million worldwide) and 8 Mile ($242.8 million worldwide).
