Netflix has announced a multi-year creative partnership with Proximity Media Television, the production company founded by Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. The deal comes after Proximity’s overall deal with 20th Television at Disney ended, with the company now developing new series for Netflix.
Though leaving 20th, Proximity still has two projects set up there with pilot orders: a reboot of The X-Files starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel and a live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards starring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman and Tim McGraw. 20th is also in early development on an Animorphs series at Disney+.
In a joint statement, the founders said, “We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects. As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling.”
Netflix head of US and Canada scripted series Jinny Howe said in a statement, “The company’s founders have cultivated an award-winning television division that continues to push the boundaries of storytelling. We are excited to welcome the entire Proximity team to Netflix.”
Proximity’s previous credits include Marvel Studios’ Ironheart on Disney+, the National Geographic docuseries Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time and the animated series Eyes of Wakanda on Disney+.
Coogler most recently wrote, directed and produced Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan, the highest-grossing original feature of 2025 with over $365M globally.
