Hip-hop turns 53 on Aug. 11, marking the anniversary of DJ Kool Herc’s back-to-school party which is widely credited as the genre’s starting point.

The lineup includes 8 Mile, ATL, Roll Bounce, Set It Off and Pootie Tang, along with Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Filly Brown, Rhyme & Reason and Butter.
Also streaming are Honey, Save the Last Dance and Save the Last Dance 2, plus Beat Street and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, along with On the Come Up and I Got the Hook Up.
Beat Street, directed by Harry Belafonte and released in 1984, is one of the genre’s earliest cinematic touchstones, capturing New York’s DJ and breakdancing scene with appearances from Soulsonic Force and more, according to Rolling Stone.
8 Mile, starring Eminem in a semi-autobiographical role, grossed more than $242 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Lose Yourself.” The film drew on Detroit’s real battle-rap scene for authenticity, casting local emcees including Miz Korona and Obie Trice.
