Two new series set in the Top Boy universe are coming to Netflix: the Barry Keoghan-led prequel Jonny Boy and a Jasmine Jobson-fronted spinoff titled Jaq. Both were announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
Jonny Boy, a five-episodes series, follows the character Keoghan played in Top Boy‘s fifth and final season. Per the official description, “Jonny is a powerful member of the Irish mob in London, serving as a soldier and drug distributor for his uncle, Tadgh McGee (Brian Gleeson).”
Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett writes and executive produces Jonny Boy through Easter Partisan Films, with Keoghan also executive producing under his Wolfcub banner. Ali Abbasi directs. Keoghan and Wolfcub’s Des Byrne said in a joint statement, “Wolfcub Productions is proud to bring Jonny McGee — the character introduced in Top Boy’s third and final season — to the screen in ‘Jonny Boy.’ We pitched our vision and idea to Netflix and the Executive Producers and they were so supportive in wanting to bring our passion project forward, exploring Jonny McGee’s origin story through a new bold lens.”
Jobson reprises her role as Jaq for the six-episode series. Netflix has not disclosed plot details for the project. Ryan Calais Cameron writes and executive produces, with Jobson also executive producing. Bennett again executive produces through Easter Partisan Films.
Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind executive produce both projects for Cowboy Films, alongside Aubrey Graham (Drake) and Adel “Future” Nur for DreamCrew Entertainment, and Maverick Carter and Jamal Henderson for SpringHill Studios, a Fulwell Entertainment label. Abbasi also executive produces Jonny Boy. Production on both series is expected to begin in 2027.
Top Boy centered on two drug dealers coming of age in the fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney. It first ran on Channel 4 for two seasons starting in 2011 before its cancellation. Drake’s interest in the show later prompted Netflix to bring it back, launching a third season in 2019 and wrapping with a fifth and final season in 2023. Ashley Walters and Kane Robinson anchored the cast across the show’s run that included Nicholas Pinnock, Jobson and more.
