ABC News is adding two new co-anchors and a meteorologist to the Good Morning America weekend team starting Sept. 12.
Rachel Scott, ABC News’ senior political correspondent, will co-anchor Saturdays alongside Whit Johnson, who has held the weekend anchor chair since 2018 and continues anchoring World News Tonight Saturday. On Sundays, correspondent Rhiannon Ally joins Gio Benitez, who’s anchored that slot since 2023. Meteorologist Leslie Lopez rounds out the new lineup.
All four anchors will also rotate through ABC News Live Weekend, the network’s 10 a.m. ET streaming broadcast on Disney+, Hulu and the ABC News app.
What are the new anchors’ backgrounds?
Scott joined ABC News as a production associate in 2016 and has since built a reporting résumé that includes questioning Vladimir Putin, reporting from Butler, Pennsylvania, after the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump, and anchoring live coverage the day Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race. She’ll keep her Washington beat covering the White House and Capitol Hill alongside her new anchoring duties.
Ally has spent four years at ABC News, most recently co-anchoring World News Now and Good Morning America First Look. Her breaking-news work includes the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse and overnight coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s and Pope Francis’s deaths, along with the conclave that elected Pope Leo. Before ABC, she worked stations in Kansas City, Miami and New York.
Lopez came to the network in April from KABC-TV’s morning weather desk in Los Angeles, where she also reported from the Eaton Fire for World News Tonight. She’s occasionally stepped outside weather reporting to host segments for On the Red Carpet at the Oscars.
What did ‘GMA’ say about the new weekend team?
GMA senior executive producer Simone Swink said, “We know weekend mornings are precious to our audience, and we could not be more excited to have Whit, Rachel, Gio and Rhiannon as our new weekend team, along with Leslie, to help our viewers make the most of their Saturdays and Sundays, plus our new format will allow this team to show up more on our weekday broadcasts, too.”
When does the new ‘GMA’ weekend lineup debut?
The new team debuts on Sept. 12. Good Morning America airs weekend mornings at 8 a.m. ET on ABC.
