General Hospital has recast the role of Ethan Lovett, with Christian Howard stepping in for Nathan Dean as of the July 27 episode on ABC. Soap Opera Digest and TV Insider both reported about the casting change. Howard made his debut in scenes opposite Maura West’s Ava Jerome, with a voiceover announcing the change on air.
Howard is a newcomer to daytime, born and raised in the United Kingdom. He began training in martial arts at 13 and has worked as a stuntman, fight choreographer and screenwriter, serving as stunt double for Jean Claude Van Damme in the 2012 film Alien Uprising, per Soap Opera Digest. His best-known role is Ken Masters in a series of live-action projects based on the Street Fighter video game franchise.
Dean, who was then known professionally as Nathan Parsons, originally joined General Hospital in January 2009 as the charming con man who was ultimately revealed to be the secret son of Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Holly Sutton (Emma Samms). He exited in 2012 and made short-term returns in 2013, 2015 and 2020. His most recent return kicked off April 17, 2026, following the death of Geary, which Dean told TV Insider was part of what prompted him to revisit the role. “Initially, they wanted three years,” he said. “I said, ‘I can’t do three years. There’s a lot going on in my personal life.’ So, we agreed to do these next four months, see how it goes.”
During his comeback run, Dean shared most of his scenes with West, Alexa Havins as Lulu Spencer, Maurice Benard as Sonny Corinthos and Jane Elliot as Tracy Quartermaine. The storyline established Ethan’s mysterious connection to baby Phoebe — the newborn now being adopted by Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) and Chase (Josh Swickard) — as well as a growing bond with Ava. Ethan initially claimed to be Phoebe’s father before admitting to Ava that he is not. The identity of the baby’s biological father remains unknown. Dean’s final episode aired July 17, per Soap Opera Digest.
How long Howard will remain in the role has not been announced. General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC.
