HBO has unveiled the official trailer for Lanterns during a Comic-Con panel, with cast members Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Garret Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan joining co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King ahead of the series’ Aug. 16 premiere. DC Studios did not host a dedicated standalone panel at the convention.
The trailer introduces the Manhunters , an alien species that can mimic the appearance of anyone, as the central threat of the season, with John asking Hal about them, leading Chandler’s character to wonder how he knows about them. The trailer also shows both men wielding their power rings to create constructs for the first time, and reveals that Laura Linney’s mystery character is one of the Guardians of the Universe. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is also confirmed as part of the series, bringing three iconic Green Lanterns together in live-action for the first time. Both John Stewart and Guy Gardner are set to return in Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow movie, currently in production, per Screen Rant.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has previously described the show as “almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over precinct Earth.”
What is ‘Lanterns’ about?
According to the official description, the series follows “new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The cast includes Chandler, Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Fillion as Guy Gardner, J. Alphonse Nicholson and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Mundy serves as showrunner. James Gunn and Peter Safran executive produce alongside Mundy, Lindelof, King, Ron Schmidt and director James Hawes.

Lanterns premieres Aug. 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, streaming on HBO Max.
