André Holland is the latest actor to sign on to Universal’s Miami Vice ’85, the film starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. Deadline first reported the news. His role hasn’t been disclosed.
Who stars in ‘Miami Vice ’85’?
Jordan and Butler lead the cast. Holland joins Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez and Walton Goggins, all previously announced. Michael Irby has also been cast as Lt. Lou Rodriguez, per Deadline.
What is ‘Miami Vice ’85’ about?
Deadline describes the film as exploring “the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami in an all-new version of Miami Vice.” It draws on the pilot of the original NBC series, “Brother’s Keeper,” which premiered Sept. 16, 1984.
Series creator Anthony Yerkovich wrote that pilot, which introduced Don Johnson’s Sonny Crockett and Phillip Michael Thomas’ Ricardo Tubbs as they go after Colombian drug lord Calderone (Miguel Piñero), the main antagonist of Season 1. Leguizamo played Calderone’s son, Orlando, in two episodes of the original series, and Deadline reports it’s unclear whether he’ll return to the role in the film.
Dan Gilroy is writing the script and Joseph Kosinski is directing. The script draws on characters Yerkovich created for the original series, which he executive produced with Michael Mann. An earlier draft came from Eric Warren Singer. Dylan Clark, through Dylan Clark Productions, produces with Kosinski.
Holland recently wrapped Prime Video’s Creed spinoff series, Delphi.
Universal has set Miami Vice ’85 for release May 19, 2028.
