Diarra from Detroit wrapped its first season with what felt like a complete story, but creator and star Diarra Kilpatrick knew there was more to tell.
Ahead of Season 2 on Paramount+, BLKCinema.com spoke with the cast, including Kilpatrick and co-star Jon Chaffin, to talk about how the second season came together and the question fans won’t stop asking: are Diarra and Danger endgame?
On letting the show lead the way
For Kilpatrick, the plan for Season 2 came from listening to the show itself.
“Even the ideas that are beyond what I had mapped out, things have changed and sometimes I just have to accept that this show is a living thing and it has its own agenda,” she said. “Like we talk about Detroit having its own agenda in this world. Sometimes the show has one as well.”
She pointed to a example from Season 1. “I tried to write a summer season and the snow just took over my fingers and wrote itself in,” she said. “And then by the end of that, it was like, it needs to be summer next. Like that’s what we needed next. So I kind of listen to the show in a sense, which I know probably sounds weird.”
Are Diarra and Danger are endgame?
Many viewers ship Kilpatrick’s Diara with Chaffin’s Danger. The question has followed the show since Season 1, when a devoted group of fans Kilpatrick calls the Dangerettes made their feelings known. “We had people first season known as the Dangerettes who would find me on set and be like, they have to end up together. I just love that people are so passionate about it and we’ll see what the show wants,” she said.
Chaffin said, “I feel like they are kindred spirits, kindred souls that they’re meant to be on this journey together, whether they’re doing it together or doing it alongside each other — they’re connected. I feel like Diarra and Danger are connected in a spiritual, soulful way where no matter what happens, they’re gonna always find their way back into each other’s lives and that’s a beautiful thing.”
Diarra from Detroit Season 2 premiered July 29 on Paramount+ with its first two episodes. Weekly episodes drop every Wednesday through Sept. 9.
