Independent Film Company has released the full trailer for Idiots, the new road comedy from writer-director Macon Blair. The film premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival under its original title The Shitheads before IFC acquired U.S. distribution rights and the title was changed ahead of its theatrical release, per The Hollywood Reporter. On why the original title stuck around so long, Blair told THR, “I got attached to it and became unable to move away from it, so it just stuck.” The film was also an official selection at SXSW.
What is ‘Idiots’ about?
According to the official description, the film follows “two unqualified bozos” hired to transfer a rich teen (Thames) to rehab when “their straightforward gig quickly spirals into dangerous mayhem.”
Blair said of the film in a statement, “The big spectacle of the movie is the ensemble: it’s a pile-up of dynamite actors going full tilt through broad slapstick comedy, chase movie shenanigans, nasty human darkness and ultimately a hopeful friendship story. From the on-fire leads to the scene-stealing cameos, it was a plain delight to watch every single one of these folks work at being Idiots.”
Who stars in ‘Idiots’?
Franco and Jackson lead as Mark and Davis respectively, with Thames as the unruly teen Sheridan. Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun and Peter Dinklage round out the cast. Blair produces alongside Franco, Alex Orr, Brandon James, Nathan Klingher, Ford Corbett and Joshua Harris.

Idiots opens in theaters Aug. 28.
