Independent Film Company has released the trailer for Motor City, a 1970s-set revenge thriller starring Alan Ritchson. The film, which premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, opens in theaters this summer.
What is ‘Motor City’ about?
According to the official description, the film follows John Miller (Ritchson), “a working-class romantic” in 1970s Detroit who “is framed by a ruthless gangster after falling for his girlfriend. After years in prison, he returns with only one mission: revenge.”
Notably, the film is largely dialogue-free. Costar Ben Foster described the project to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival, saying, “The film itself, Motor City — we just wrapped — is virtually a silent film. There are five lines of dialogue. Jack White is helping with the music, so it’s like a rock disco revenge film. It’s like a graphic novel, so it’ll be interesting to see how that shakes out.”
Director Potsy Ponciroli said in a statement, “We shot Motor City to be immersive, every frame, every sound, designed for a theater. It’s a love letter to Detroit, to 70s cinema, and to the kind of filmmaking you can feel,” per Deadline.
The script, written by Chad St. John, dates back to the 2009 Black List and went through more than a decade of development, with actors including Chris Evans, Jake Gyllenhaal and Gerard Butler previously attached before Ritchson came aboard, per Screen Rant.

Alongside Ritchson, the cast includes Shailene Woodley, Pablo Schreiber, Lionel Boyce, Ben Foster and Ben McKenzie.
Ponciroli directs from St. John’s screenplay. Greg Silverman, Jon Berg, Joshua Harris, Cliff Roberts and St. John produce.
When does ‘Motor City’ open in theaters?
Motor City opens in theaters July 24.
