Everything To Know About ’24 Jump Street’ Now That It Is Official

24 Jump Street is happening. The long-awaited third installment in Sony’s R-rated comedy franchise is officially in development, and the original leads are in talks to come back. Here’s what we know so far.

Who is returning for ’24 Jump Street’?

Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube are all in talks to return, according to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Hill and Tatum would reprise their roles as Schmidt and Jenko, the underachieving cops at the center of both prior films. Ice Cube would return as their superior, Captain Dickson. Variety notes that Tatum currently has an offer to return and that negotiations are expected to take place soon.

Who is directing ’24 Jump Street’?

Rodney Rothman, best known for co-directing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is set to direct. He wrote the script alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy, per Variety. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, are returning as producers, along with Neal H. Moritz. Tatum and Reid Carolin are also producing under their Free Association banner, as are Hill and Matt Dines under their Strong Baby banner.

Why is it called ’24 Jump Street’ and not ’23 Jump Street’?

A third Jump Street film has been in development at Sony for more than a decade. A version titled 23 Jump Street was previously written and scrapped; it had been designed as a crossover with Sony’s Men in Black franchise. Tatum praised that script publicly in 2024, calling it “the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The jump to 24 is intentional. The ending of 22 Jump Street features Schmidt and Jenko going undercover in a series of other settings including a medical school, culinary school, seminary, and eventually space, essentially playing out what a 23 Jump Street might have been. Titling the next film 24 Jump Street keeps the franchise’s self-aware running gag intact, per Variety.

The films are themselves already a reboot. The Jump Street franchise is based on the 1987 Fox television series, which starred Johnny Depp and ran for five seasons. Depp had a cameo in the 2012 film.

How did the first two films perform?

21 Jump Street grossed over $200 million worldwide. The 2014 sequel 22 Jump Street topped that with a $331 million box office haul, according to Variety. Lord and Miller made their live-action directorial debuts with the first film, which had a script from Hill and Michael Bacall.
