Production has begun in Paris on Miles & Juliette, the new film from Bill Pohlad and his River Road Entertainment. Deadline reported the latest on the film. Damson Idris stars as Miles Davis and Anamaria Vartolomei as Juliette Gréco, and the rest of the cast has now been filled out. A first-look image has also been released.
What is ‘Miles & Juliette’ about?
Per Deadline, the film “tells the story of a 22-year-old Miles Davis on a transformative trip to Paris in 1949, where he meets and falls in love with Juliette Gréco, the French singer and actress then emerging as the face of the postwar Left Bank.” Deadline adds that the film is “set amid the creative ferment of Paris at a turning point in music and culture” and “traces the bond between two young artists in the years before the world knew their names.”
Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard wrote the screenplay. The trip was Davis’ first outside the U.S., per Deadline.
Who stars in ‘Miles & Juliette’?
Idris plays Davis and Vartolomei plays Gréco. J. Alphonse Nicholson plays Kenny “Klook” Clarke, Jay Reeves plays Tadd Dameron, and musician and producer Terrace Martin plays Charlie “Bird” Parker. Denny Love plays James Moody, Lodric D. Collins plays Max Roach and Hubert Point-Du Jour plays John Coltrane.
What did Bill Pohlad say about the film?
Pohlad said, “I’ve been captivated by the idea of telling this story — a fleeting encounter between two extraordinary young artists that becomes something neither of them could have imagined. There’s something deeply cinematic about that kind of love: the music, the city, the artists, and the moment in time. Watching Miles & Juliette come to life with this remarkable cast and crew is a dream come true.”
This isn’t Pohlad’s first music biopic. He directed Love & Mercy, the Brian Wilson film starring Paul Dano, John Cusack, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti.
Pohlad produces with Andrew Van Wyk for River Road, alongside Kim Roth and Dan Clifton. Mick Jagger and Victoria Pearman produce for Jagged Films. Pascal Caucheteux’s Why Not Productions is the French production services company.
Mike Overman executive produces for River Road, joined by Darryl Porter, Erin Davis, Cheryl Davis and Vincent Wilburn Jr. for the Miles Davis estate.
The crew includes cinematographer Maryse Alberti, production designer Dan Weil and editor Sabine Hoffman. Robert Glasper composes the score and produces the music. He also produced the 2016 Miles Davis tribute album Everything’s Beautiful.
