Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for Wild Horse Nine, the new dark comedy from writer-director Martin McDonagh starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell. The film has screened as several festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival.
Malkovich and Rockwell lead the cast, alongside Steve Buscemi, Mariana di Girolamo and Ailín Salas, with Tom Waits and Parker Posey. The film marks a reunion for Rockwell and McDonagh, who previously collaborated on Seven Psychopaths and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Waits also previously worked with McDonagh on Seven Psychopaths.
Per the official synopsis, “Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris (Malkovich) and Lee (Rockwell) are dispatched from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, MJ (Steve Buscemi). Amongst the island’s iconic statues, as the longtime partners wrestle with their dark pasts and present conspiracies, Chris’ newfound bond with a pair of rebellious students (di Girolamo and Salas) threatens to send everyone’s trip to this remote paradise sideways.”
McDonagh writes and directs. Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, McDonagh and Anita Overland produce. The film reunites McDonagh with Searchlight Pictures, Blueprint Pictures and Film4, following The Banshees of Inisherin.
