What does Sean Reifel do for a living?

Sean was sworn in as a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania police officer in August 2025. He introduced himself in the show’s promotional material as a cop. “I’m not a model, not an actor, I’m a police officer actually,” he said in Peacock’s cast trailer. “You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that.” Per Swooon, he says he’s been in law enforcement for about six years.

Why did the mayor call out Sean?

Before the season premiered, Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds publicly criticized Sean for resigning from the police department to appear on the show. Per E! News, Bethlehem’s department policy prohibits active officers from participating in reality television programs, meaning Sean had to fully resign rather than take a leave of absence.

“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” Reynolds said, per WHTM. “We are disappointed he left, as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year.”

Reynolds added, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”

Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott also weighed in, saying per The Morning Call, “I love Sean. He’s a good guy. He was a great officer, but I’m disappointed. Just because we work so incredibly hard to try to recruit the best people we can to be part of the Bethlehem Police Department.”

Sean has not publicly responded to the criticism — but his family and fans have come out in his defense. His sister @BriceyMarie commented under an E! Online Instagram post pushing back on city officials. “This could have been a great opportunity for the mayor and police department to connect with the community, generate positive publicity for the town, and help improve perceptions of law enforcement,” she wrote, per Complex. “Instead, they chose a response that will likely reinforce the stereotypes they should be working to change.”

His mother also weighed in on social media, writing “This is Sean’s mom, and this makes me very sad because the mayor doesn’t see what a huge missed opportunity this was,” per Complex.

Fans echoed the sentiment, with one commenter writing, “I don’t understand why this mayor took time to give an interview about this. People have the right to leave a job for a better opportunity for themselves,” per E! Online

Sean has been open about fatherhood in pre-show interviews and on the show itself. “Had a baby that was not planned,” he told fellow islanders in Episode 1. “The greatest thing that ever happened to me, though. Being told you’re a father was the craziest 180 for me. I’m so proud to be his dad.”
