Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan reflected on what it was like joining a cast full of awards-caliber actors for The Magic Faraway Tree, saying the group’s shared commitment to the family film set the tone for the entire production.
What does Nicola Coughlan say about her castmates’ commitment?
Coughlan, who voices Silky in the film, said working alongside actors like Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy felt especially meaningful given how seriously everyone treated the project despite it being a children’s film.
“I think it was a really special thing because I think you have all these incredible actors who’ve done such a range of incredible roles, and they have Oscar nominations and Emmy wins and all of this stuff,” she said in an exclusive interview with BLKCinema.com. “But we were all coming together as a supporting cast for three incredible kids that lead this movie. But no one, none of the grown-ups, let’s say, was there giving it a half-ass performance. Everyone was giving their all and really committed to it. And that just creates a very beautiful environment. It really makes a difference when people care.”
Why did that commitment matter to Nicola Coughlan?
Coughlan tied that dedication back to her own childhood, pointing to the lasting impact a favorite movie can have on a young viewer.
“It’s a very different thing. If you’re making a kid’s movie, that could be a kid’s favorite movie forever. My favorite movie is The Wizard of Oz. That impacted upon me when I was like 4 or 5 years old, and it’s impacted everything I’ve done since,” she said. “So like, if we could be one kid’s favorite movie, it would be such an incredible thing. But yeah, seeing actors of that caliber, really committed to it, it’s just the best, the best.”
The Magic Faraway Tree is directed by Ben Gregor and also stars Nonso Anozie, Jessica Gunning, Jennifer Saunders, and Rebecca Ferguson. Vertical releases the film in theaters nationwide on August 21.
