Sony Pictures has released the trailer for Klara and the Sun, the new sci-fi drama written and directed by Taika Waititi. The film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara and is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. Amy Adams also stars in the pic.

What is ‘Klara and the Sun’ about?

According to the official description, the film follows Klara (Ortega), “an Artificial Friend who wants nothing more than to find the perfect home. When Klara meets Josie (Mia Tharia), each immediately senses a kindred spirit in the other. Josie has a fraught relationship with her mother (Adams) and they’ve suffered great loss, but Klara’s innocent wonder and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and bring light to Josie’s complicated world.”

Waititi told Vanity Fair that the film marks a tonal departure for him, calling it possibly “my most dramatic film.” He said he initially considered leaning into comedy before deciding the source material called for something different, telling the outlet he wanted to stay close to the novel’s exploration of “loneliness, love, humanity, and spirituality.”

On casting Ortega, Waititi said he wanted “someone young and hip and cool” for the role, adding that she was “incredibly advanced and intelligent and mature and quite intimidating when you talk to her.” He continued, “She had sort of made me feel uncomfortable and a little bit out of my depth, and I thought, oh, that’s a good challenge.”

Who stars in ‘Klara and the Sun’?

Alongside Ortega and Adams, the cast includes Mia Tharia, Aran Murphy, Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne. The film marks Ortega and Buscemi’s second project together, following Netflix’s Wednesday.

Waititi wrote the screenplay with Dahvi Waller and produced alongside David Heyman and Garrett Basch. Gary Barber, Alex G. Scott, Jeffrey Clifford, Rosie Alison and Ishiguro executive produce. It is produced by 3000 Pictures and Spyglass Media Group.

When does ‘Klara and the Sun’ open in theaters?

Klara and the Sun opens in theaters Oct. 23.
