‘It: Welcome To Derry’ Finally Gets Season 2 Renewal Confirmation From HBO

HBO has renewed It: Welcome to Derry for a second season, formalizing plans the show’s creatives have discussed since Season 1 wrapped. Andy and Barbara Muschietti executive produce, with Brad Caleb Kane serving as showrunner.

What is ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 about?

According to the official description, “Set in the world of Stephen King’s IT universe, IT: WELCOME TO DERRY is based on King’s IT novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films IT and IT Chapter Two. Season two takes place in 1935 during the Great Depression and centers on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to buy ammo and end up facing unimaginable horror.”

Andy Muschietti has said the Bradley Gang storyline draws from a real 1930s Maine crime case, telling Deadline’s Contenders TV panel, “The Bradley Gang is based on the Brady Gang, which is a real-life gang of robbers that were executed in the streets of Bangor, Maine.” He also told Variety that Season 2’s Depression-era setting brings a different tone than Season 1: “In this case, on the surface, Derry is a graveyard almost. It’s a carcass of something because people are depleted, poor, tired, jobless, homeless. The kids don’t have a suburban, comforting life.”

The Muschiettis and Kane had discussed plans for a second and third season dating back to before Season 1 premiered, with a writers’ room for Season 2 opening earlier this year even before the official renewal, according to Variety.
