Office Romance landed on Netflix on June 5 and quickly became one of the platform’s most-talked-about new releases, and it is partly because of what’s on screen and partly because of what people think might be happening off it. Here’s what to know.
Is ‘Office Romance’ based on a true story?
No. Office Romance is an original screenplay written by Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the idea came together during a train ride from Manchester to London, when Goldstein and Kelly started talking about their love of classic rom-coms. “We started talking about how much we loved old-school rom-coms,” Goldstein said. “We were like, ‘Who’s your dream person to make a rom-com with?’ Without hesitation, we were both like, ‘J.Lo.’”
Goldstein wrote the script specifically for Lopez, who told Jimmy Kimmel Live! the pitch was hard to turn down, per Newsweek. “He wrote this script for me,” she said. “He also sent a note that said, ‘You’re at the top of our list. It’s a list of one. If you don’t do the movie, we’re not making it.’”
What is ‘Office Romance’ about?
Per the official description, “Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein lead this charming and raunchy romantic comedy. Lopez plays a powerful CEO and Goldstein is her airline’s newest lawyer. Their secret Office Romance takes off when these two workaholics stop playing by the rules and start following their hearts.”
The film is directed by Ol Parker, who previously directed Ticket to Paradise and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Are Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein dating in real life?
The two addressed the rumors directly during a June 2 appearance on the Today show. Lopez deflected, noting that romance speculation tends to follow her whenever she works with someone. “There’s never a time when I’m seen with someone, I’m working with somebody, they don’t put me with that person,” she said. Goldstein quipped, “I think if you stand near her that’s what happens. That’s why I’ve been standing so close this whole time.”
When host Savannah Guthrie pressed for a direct answer, Lopez confirmed they are not dating.
