Lionsgate has released the first images from Above the Below, a survival thriller about three astronauts stranded deep underwater. Idris Elba directs with Martin Owen and also stars opposite Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
The synopsis reads, “When three astronauts survive a catastrophic fall from space, they become trapped in the crushing depths of the ocean with oxygen rapidly running out. Facing a race against time where every breath could be their last, they must make impossible choices about who will risk everything to reach the surface and who may be left behind.”
Screen Daily reported in October 2023 that Elba would co-direct the film with Owen and that Lionsgate would launch sales at the American Film Market. The Hollywood Reporter followed that November with news that Elba would also star.
Owen created the story, and Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell and Vicki Sargent wrote the screenplay. Gina Carter and Matt Williams produce.
Lionsgate releases Above the Below in theaters Dec. 4.
