Starz has cast the first three series regulars for its untitled family drama set in the world of Black rodeo in Texas, with DeWanda Wise, Tian Richards and Marcus Mitchell boarding as leads.
Who stars in the untitled Black rodeo drama?
Wise will play Anaya Clarke-Reagan, the Clarke family’s firstborn. Per the official description, Anaya is “savvy, polished, and highly educated,” the eldest sibling and mayor of Trinity City, who has built a conservative public image alongside her husband, a powerful judge, that conceals darker desires. She works tirelessly for her city, but family and self-preservation come first, even if that means protecting them from their own father.
Richards will play Rodney Clarke, described as “the fire-starter,” Anaya’s openly gay younger brother. Charming and impulsive, Rodney has little interest in the family rodeo business, preferring to run Big Rod’s Likka Lounge, where he’s tried to leave his troubled past behind. When his business is robbed and one of his own is killed, he sets off on a revenge quest that threatens to pull in the whole family.
Mitchell will play Julius Calhoun, “the hometown hero” and Trinity City’s most decorated bull rider since Sebastian Clarke. Disciplined and deeply spiritual, Julius is looking to take his career beyond Trinity City, a decision that tests his body and his friendship with Sebastian.
What is the untitled Black rodeo drama about?
The one-hour, eight-episode series follows three Clarke siblings bound by the legacy their mother built and the unfinished business their father left behind, set against the backdrop of Southeast Texas rodeo culture.
The series marks Starz’s second wholly owned series as the network builds out its fully owned programming pipeline. Production is expected to begin in Atlanta later this month.
Kirk A. Moore serves as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Johnson and Myki Bajaj of Gran Via Productions, and Tony Hernandez, Elise Henderson and Lilly Burns of Counterpart Studios also executive produce. Giovanna Desselle and Christina Jokanovich oversee the series for Starz.
