Colman Domingo and Tony-nominated Slave Play director Robert O’Hara are in talks to write a live-action film about Princess Tiana.
The project, in very early stages at Disney, is an original idea inspired by the 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog rather than a direct remake. No deals have closed. Deadline first reported the news, with Variety later confirming.
The original The Princess and the Frog, which featured Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana, grossed $267 million at the global box office and earned three Academy Award nominations, per Variety. A planned spinoff series, Tiana, stalled in development at Disney+ a few years back. Despite this, Disney commemorated Tiana’s cultural impact by retheming its Splash Mountain attraction as “Tiana’s Bayou Adventure” at Disney World and Disneyland.
The project comes during a significant stretch for Domingo, whose film Michael recently crossed $1 billion to become the highest-grossing musical biopic of all time, per Variety. He also earned double Emmy nominations this year for The Four Seasons and Euphoria. Domingo will soon star work on the Nat “King” Cole biopic Unforgettable, where he will direct, produce and star.
Domingo and O’Hara previously collaborated on Wild With Happy, presented by The Public Theater in 2012. O’Hara received a Tony nomination for best direction of a play for Slave Play in 2020.
