,

Prime Video has revealed the premiere date and first images for Barbershop, the upcoming comedy series based on the film franchise.

Fowler leads the cast as Trav, alongside Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye and Langston Kerman. Guest stars include Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker and Belmont Cameli.

As the description states, “Travis ‘Trav’ Walker (Fowler) returns to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather’s legacy at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop, but the shop has changed, and so has the city. As Trav struggles to find his place among a new crew of barbers and loyal customers, Calvin’s remains what it’s always been, a place for sharp fades, sharp opinions, and a community that always has something to say.”

The original Barbershop opened in theaters in 2002, starring Ice Cube as Calvin Palmer Jr. A sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, followed in 2004. The franchise also spun off Beauty Shop, starring Queen Latifah, in 2005, and a third film, Barbershop: The Next Cut, arrived a decade later in 2016.

This isn’t the franchise’s first attempt at a TV adaptation, as a Barbershop sitcom aired on Showtime in 2005, starring Omar Gooding in the Calvin role and developed by John Ridley, running for one season.

Marshall Todd, co-writer of the original film, executive produces, writes and co-showruns alongside Max Searle, who also executive produces. Kevin Hart, Bryan Smiley, Mike Stein and Tiffany Brown executive produce for Hartbeat, along with Bradley Gardner for Busy B Entertainment, Cameron Burnett and Autumn Bailey-Ford for Prominent Productions, and George L. Tillman and Robert Teitel for State Street Pictures. Fowler also executive produces, and Oz Rodriguez directs and executive produces. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, MGM Television, Hartbeat, Busy B Entertainment, Prominent Productions and State Street Pictures.
