Alex Cooper’s dating reality series Love Overboard has been canceled at Hulu after just one season. According to Page Six, insiders said the show “wasn’t finding its audience,” prompting Disney to cancel it after its nine-episode run. The Hollywood Reporter added that the series never drew the kind of audience Hulu’s other unscripted shows have, pointing to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, The Kardashians and Vanderpump Villa as comparisons.
What was ‘Love Overboard’ about?
Gabby Windey, who previously led a season of The Bachelorette and won Season 3 of The Traitors, hosted the show, which put 22 singles on a yacht where romantic pairings determined access to the boat’s luxury perks.
Hulu’s synopsis is as follows: “Get ready to hit the high seas with Love Overboard! Step aboard the ultimate luxury yacht, where sexy singles are ready to mix and mingle … and find love. But there’s a twist … gaining access to the yacht’s extravagant amenities won’t be so simple. As the journey unfolds, romance ignites; alliances form; and hearts are shattered. In the end, only one couple will reign supreme.”
The show premiered in late March and marked Cooper’s first unscripted TV project, per Variety. It came together through a partnership between Cooper’s Unwell Productions and Jeff Jenkins Productions, working alongside 3BMG and Walt Disney Television Alternative. Cooper produced the series with her husband, Matt Kaplan, plus Unwell’s Mina Lefevre, Jeff Jenkins Productions’ Jeff Jenkins, Russell Jay-Staglik and Jason Ehrlich, and 3BMG’s Ross Weintraub and Reinout Oerlemans.
What’s next for Alex Cooper’s Unwell Productions?
Cooper’s Netflix dating show with Harry Jowsey, Let’s Marry Harry, launched earlier this month, according to Variety, and Unwell is following its Winter Games YouTube series with a Summer Games installment premiering Sept. 7, per THR. On the scripted side, Cooper has You Deserve to Know in the works at Hulu, with Vampire Diaries alums Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley attached to star.
Cooper also recently produced and conducted an interview with Miley Cyrus for Disney+’s Hannah Montana 20th-anniversary special, per Variety.
Page Six additionally reported that Unwell landed an investment from Patrick Whitesell’s firm WTSL valuing the company at around $500 million, and that Cooper recently switched talent agencies from UTA to CAA. A source told the outlet Disney’s relationship with Cooper remains intact: “Disney has a great relationship with Alex and is in development with her on a few projects.” Reps for Disney and Cooper declined to comment, per Page Six.
