Hulu has canceled Not Suitable for Work, the Mindy Kaling-created comedy that launched in June. Variety was the first to break the news. Warner Bros. Television, which produced the series, plans to shop it to potential new homes.
What is ‘Not Suitable for Work’ about?
Per the show’s logline, the series centers on “work-obsessed 20-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.” Ella Hunt stars as AJ, an investment banker from Boston who moves to New York and moves in with her best friend, aspiring celebrity stylist Abby (Avantika). They live across the hall from Davis (Will Angus), AJ’s co-worker who has a crush on her; Josh (Jack Martin), a young journalist; and Kel (Nicholas Duvernay), an aspiring actor and med school dropout. Jay Ellis stars as their boss, Bill.
The Season 1 finale left multiple storylines unresolved, with all five leads ending up in love triangles and Davis and AJ’s jobs left in limbo after they stood up to Bill, according to Deadline.
What did Mindy Kaling say about a potential Season 2?
Kaling told Deadline in June, ahead of the cancellation, that she was hopeful about a renewal: “Our writers room has been up for Season 2, which is wonderful. Of course, the big question is whether we’ll get an official pickup for production, I keep my fingers crossed. I love the show so much, I’m so glad that it’s doing well. One of the things that has made me so happy is how much the cast loves the show, and the writing staff loves the show, and the way that the cast expresses their love through all the social content that they’ve been doing.”
Kaling executive produced the series with showrunner Charlie Grandy, 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein and Greg Mottola, under her Kaling International label in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Recurring guest stars included Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson, Constance Wu, Laura Bell Bundy, May Hong, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suárez and Michael Benjamin Washington.
The series marked Kaling’s first sole creator credit since The Mindy Project and completed a loose trilogy drawn from her own life, following Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls.
