Roxane Gay Biopic ‘Surviving The Silence’ Sets Lifetime Premiere In September, Releases Trailer

Lifetime has announced Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story, a movie executive produced and written by Roxane Gay, adapted from her 2017 memoir Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body. The film is narrated by Gay herself. The trailer was also released on Tuesday.

What is ‘Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story’ about?

Per the official description, “when 12-year-old Roxane moves with her family to what appears to be the ideal suburban community, her life is forever changed after a devastating act of sexual violence.” As she grapples with the lasting effects of that trauma, per the official description, “Roxane turns to food as a means of survival, beginning a lifelong journey to understand her body, reclaim her voice and confront a society that often defines women by their appearance.” The film is described as “a deeply personal portrait of resilience, identity and the enduring pursuit of self-acceptance.”

Who stars in ‘Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story’?

Hilda Martin plays young Roxane, with Sunnii E. Bartee playing Roxane as an adult.

Asia Youngman directs from a screenplay written by Gay. Suzanne Todd, Howard Braunstein and Gay executive produce in association with Suzanne Todd Productions.

Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story premieres Saturday, Sept. 5, at p.m. on Lifetime.
