Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his G-Unit Film & Television have joined Vice Studios and Starbreeze Entertainment’s adaptation of the video game franchise Payday, executive producing the project.
What is ‘Payday’ about?
Payday launched in 2011 and has since built a community of more than 50 million players, according to Starbreeze. Per the official description, the games’ “masked protagonists” pull off heists across a range of locations, with “stories about betrayal, conspiracy, and corruption.”
Jackson said, “G-Unit Film & TV has built cinematic crime stories that connect with audiences around the world. Teaming up with Vice Studios and bringing the world of Payday to the screen gives us the chance to build something big, a high-energy franchise that pushes the heist genre forward.”
Starbreeze Entertainment CEO Adolf Kristjansson said, “Payday has always been about the fantasy of getting away with it. Curtis and G-Unit don’t do subtle, and neither do we. This is not about playing it safe; it’s about doing the franchise justice with people who are as immersed in the world as we are.”
Vice Studios President Amy Powell added, “Vice has always been drawn to stories that live outside the lines, and Payday is exactly that kind of world. G-Unit understands what makes Payday tick, and they’re bringing a perspective that’s true to the franchise without playing it safe.”
What else is on Vice Studios’ and G-Unit’s slates?
Vice Studios is also behind Capital, a Guy Ritchie crime drama, and Gangs of London, now in production on its fourth season, along with the upcoming Bad Apples starring Saoirse Ronan.
G-Unit Film & Television’s credits include Starz’s Power franchise and the Netflix docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning, which drew three Emmy nominations. At Peacock, the company is developing an adaptation of Jackson’s novel The Accomplice, with Taraji P. Henson attached to star. Jackson also stars as Balrog in Legendary Entertainment’s Street Fighter adaptation, out Oct. 14.
