Marvel Cinematic Universe series Wonder Man has been canceled at Disney+. It is a surprising reversal given that Disney announced a Season 2 renewal in March, which was about two months after the show’s January debut. A writers’ room for Season 2 was never opened and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects, per Variety exclusive report on the news.
The cancellation is notable given the show’s critical reception and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Still, as Variety noted, the show made just single appearance in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 before falling off the chart the following week.
While Wonder Man will not proceed with Season 2, the characters could still appear in other Marvel projects in the future, a source with knowledge of the situation told Variety. Virtually all live-action Marvel series on Disney+ have been single seasons, with Loki the rare exception.
Wonder Man starred Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley and was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Guest serving as showrunner.
