Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, is from Larache, Morocco, while his mother, Sheila Ebana, is from Bata, Equatorial Guinea, giving the Barcelona star Moroccan and Equatoguinean origins, per Athlon Sports. His full surname is Nasraoui Ebana — Nasraoui inherited from his Moroccan father and Ebana from his Equatoguinean mother. His first name, Lamine Yamal, is actually his given name rather than his surname, per Athlon Sports.
Why does Yamal play for Spain?
Because of his parents’ heritage, Yamal was eligible to represent Spain, Morocco or Equatorial Guinea at international level. He ultimately chose Spain, the country where he was born and raised, after progressing through the Spanish youth system, per Athlon Sports.
He has been open about considering Morocco. “The truth is that it was something strange because it was something on my mind, ‘Hey, I could play with Morocco,’” Yamal told CBS’ 60 Minutes. “Morocco had just reached the semifinals of the World Cup, but in the moment, the truth is, I never really had a doubt, honestly. In the end, with all the love and respect I have for Morocco, I’ve always wanted to play in the Euros. I will always have affection for Morocco. It’s my country, too.”
How does Yamal honor his roots?
Yamal has never hidden his background. He often wears customized football boots featuring the flags of Morocco and Equatorial Guinea, per Athlon Sports. His “304” celebration is a tribute to the Rocafonda neighborhood in Mataró, referencing the final digits of its postal code — the working-class neighborhood where he grew up with his mother after his parents separated around 2012, per Athlon Sports.
Yamal is also a practicing Muslim and has spoken publicly about his faith. After scoring his first World Cup goal against Saudi Arabia, he celebrated by performing sujood, the Islamic act of prostration in gratitude to God, per Athlon Sports.
