Jurnee Smollett is joining the company of The Whoopi Monologues at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, taking over from Kerry Washington. Washington plays her final performance Aug. 2.
The Whoopi Monologues is a reimagining of Whoopi Goldberg’s iconic 1984 solo show, which premiered at Dance Theatre Workshop before transferring to Broadway, written by Goldberg and directed by two-time Tony Award nominee Whitney White. The Off-Broadway production began performances July 7 and officially opened July 13.

Smollett joins a company that includes Dominique Fishback, Kecia Lewis, Danielle Pinnock and Kara Young, with understudies Kai Heath, Denise Manning and Pavar Snipe also in the company.
The production is produced in partnership with Whoop, Inc./Tom Leonardis and Simpson Street. The creative team includes Adam Rigg and Anton Volovsek on set design, Tony Award winner Qween Jean on costume design, Cha See on lighting design and Fan Zhang on original music and sound design.

According to the official description, the show finds “the trailblazing work returns — reimagined for a new generation led by a remarkable ensemble of 5 women bringing Goldberg’s unforgettable characters back to the stage.
