James Remar’s Harry Morgan has aged right alongside Dexter.
In Paramount+’s Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, Remar returns as Dexter’s late father, who lives on in his son’s mind, alongside Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine as Blessing and Desmond Harrington as Joey Quinn. The cast spoke exclusively with BLKCinema.com about how Dexter’s midlife crisis is shaping his relationships this season.
James Remar on how Harry has changed with Dexter
Remar said the father-son dynamic has shifted now that Dexter has reached the age Remar was when the original series began.
“They relate to each other more as peers. Dexter is the same age as I was when I started the show 20 years ago, and in his imagination, in his memory, I have aged also,” Remar said. “I talk to people that have been in my life that are dead, and a lot of people I know do, and my conversations with them have evolved over the years. So for me, it feels like that’s a very natural thing. I believe it’s what people do. It’s why we’ve created heaven. It’s why we remember the spirits of the people that have been in our lives and influenced us very deeply. So in a word, yes, it has influenced it, and I believe in a very positive, authentic way.”
He pointed to a poem that has stayed with him for years.
“I read a poem many years ago, a story about a woman who lost her husband in the Korean War. They were in their 20s, and she says, I’ve dreamed of you for the past 50 years, and you come to my door now, your hair is streaked with white,” Remar said. “It’s never left me.”
How Dexter’s midlife crisis raises the stakes
Harrington said Dexter’s restlessness makes him more unpredictable.
“He has a code, so he has a certain outline, but the midlife crisis aspect makes him a little more dangerous, I think,” Harrington said. “There’s this hint of, you see him a little wearier physically, but he’s still down for it. He’s not quitting, so that makes him a little dangerous.”
Mwine said Blessing’s place in Dexter’s life could cut both ways.
“I think Blessing continues to be a blessing in his life in a way, but wherever there’s a blessing, there’s also a curse. There’s also something else that is lurking and could come through,” Mwine said. “I think that’s what keeps audiences guessing, me guessing, and it makes this season so thrilling.”
