Tubi’s Buzzkill puts a slasher inside a sorority house and hands the investigation to the drunkest girl there. Siena Agudong plays Nora, a party girl whose foggy memories hold the clues to who’s killing her sorority sisters, in the horror-comedy from writer Suzanne Keilly and director Jem Garrard.
Brec Bassinger and Aliyah’s Interlude play two of Nora’s sisters, and they spoke with BLKCinema.com exclusively about the film’s campiest moments, stepping into sorority life and where they’d take the story if there’s a sequel.
Brec Bassinger on Kendall’s villain moment
Bassinger plays Kendall, who is revealed as the film’s villain. Asked about the scene in which Kendall flies across the room, and about working with Agudong to bring it to life, Bassinger said the over-the-top role was a gift.
“It was so fun. As an actor, you can’t be given anything better. It’s just so creatively stimulating,” Bassinger said. “Working with Siena, and specifically how she brought Drunk Nora to life, where it was just so subtle and everything was [toned] down, it just helped the juxtaposition where I could really lean into Kendall’s camp.”
She said the film’s climactic speech came late in the shoot.
“It was so action-y, and the big speech at the end, we were filming that at like 3 a.m., and it was one of the last days of shooting,” she said. “But I was like, oh, this is my villain moment, which is not typically what I get to play. So it was such a surreal moment for me.”
Aliyah’s Interlude on sorority life and sisterhood
Asked about playing a sorority girl navigating the social structure of her house, Aliyah’s Interlude said the role let her step into a world she never experienced herself.
“Honestly, it was really cool, because I never got to be in a sorority, and I don’t think I would ever be in a sorority,” she said. “But I think the whole concept of sisterhood and really leaning on my girls was something that I’m very familiar with.”
“So it was really cool, and I loved being in a sorority house and just all the vibes of it. It was everything,” Aliyah’s Interlude continued. “And then the house was pink too, so it’s just so girly and fun. I loved it.”
What would a ‘Buzzkill’ sequel look like?
The film’s ending leaves the door open for another installment, and both stars have ideas for where it could go.
“I kind of want to see them interacting more with people on campus, if that makes sense,” Aliyah’s Interlude said. “Like maybe more fraternity houses, something of that sort.”
Bassinger said she would want to dig into the sorority sisters’ backstories.
“I’d love to see a little bit more origin too,” Bassinger said. “I love the moment in the movie where we all give our confessions. Well, I don’t, but all the other girls do, like, ‘I wear Ed Hardy ironically.’ I think that moment was so interesting because you got to see they have such a history behind how they present now. I think getting to know more about each of these girls would be really interesting.”
“I agree. I want to see why Nora is an alcoholic, like why she became one,” Aliyah’s Interlude added. “That would be fire.”
Asked about the diversity of the film’s sorority, which stands apart from how traditional Greek life is often depicted on screen, Aliyah’s Interlude pointed to the college experience.
“I definitely feel like that’s the beauty of going to college. You meet people from so many different backgrounds, and I think that’s just kind of how it played out in this case,” she said.
