Dark Matter has returned for Season 2 on Apple TV after a two-year wait, picking up as the family Jason fought to reunite with in Season 1 now tries to build a new life together.
In the premiere, Daniela has a breakdown alone in a hotel bathroom while attempting something ordinary. Jennifer Connelly said the moment reflects a deeper unraveling for her character. “I think it’s kind of like a metaphor for what’s happening,” she said exclusively to BLKCinema.com during she and “She’s trying to walk the path that she’s been walking with her family, and nothing is real anymore. Nothing that she had always understood it to be. And she’s not the person that she thought she was. She’s done this horrible thing. She’s uprooted [her son].”
Connelly said Daniela’s actions conflict with how she’s always seen herself, especially given her history of losing a child. “She thought she was someone who put protecting her son above anything,” she said. “And now she’s torn him away from his whole world and his reality and his friends and his family and his life. So she isn’t the person she thought she was. He isn’t the person she thought he was. So I think all of it just comes crashing down on her.”
Season 1 followed Jason’s fight to get home; Season 2 finds him and his family trying to settle into a new one. Joel Edgerton said the shift reframes Jason’s relationship with success and failure. “The difference between Jason 2 and Jason 1 was that Jason 2 had somewhat achieved his goals and yet felt like he was still missing something,” he said. “And Jason 1 had kind of given up on his dreams. Having his family taken away from him, or himself taken away from his family, and going on this quest gave him a chance to succeed again. It’s something to fight for.”
Edgerton said that once Jason reunites with his family, a new kind of failure sets in. “As they try and find a new home in Season 2, he’s reminded again and again throughout the season of what he’s not able to achieve, which is to find a safe place for the family, create a sense of stability,” he said. “I feel like Jason 1 is successful in one regard, but that success then puts him in a place where he’s like, ‘Alright, I know deep down I think I’m a failure.’”
