Apple TV has picked up Ascension, a new drama series from Alfonso Cuarón, marking Caitríona Balfe’s first major TV role since Outlander concluded in May. Balfe stars and executive produces.
What is ‘Ascension’ about?
Per the official description, the series is “inspired by” Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and follows Rose, “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own.” When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, per the official description, “she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings — until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.” The series explores evil and innocence, per the official description, while asking “how far we’ll go — and what we’ll sacrifice — to protect the ones we love, even when the greatest threat to them may be ourselves.”
Natalie Erika James and Christian White co-showrun the series, with James also serving as lead director. James, White, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón wrote the series.
Alfonso Cuarón executive produces under his overall deal with Apple through his production company Esperanto Filmoj, alongside Esperanto’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz and Carlos Cuarón. Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden executive produce for Anonymous Content, which produces the series alongside Apple Studios. James and White also executive produce.
Ascension marks Cuarón’s latest Apple TV collaboration following Disclaimer. Balfe next appears in Focus Features’ Sense and Sensibility, opening in the U.K. Sept. 25 and the U.S. Oct. 16, and has two films screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival: Tenzing and A Long Winter.
