After officially closing on the U.S. rights to La Bola Negra following a competitive bidding war, Netflix has the Cannes Film Festival breakout set for a theatrical run before streaming. It seems to be an early, key awards season title for the streamer.
What is ‘La Bola Negra’ about?
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the film “follows three men whose lives span moments in Spanish history across the 20th and 21st centuries, bound together through desire, pain, inheritance, and an exploration of queer identity.” The title borrows its name from an unfinished play by Spanish playwright and poet Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated in 1936, with the film exploring his legacy through a contemporary lens.
The film is directed, co-written and produced by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis, who won the Best Director prize at Cannes. The duo told Tudum, “When we began writing La Bola Negra, we wanted to tell a story about freedom, legacy, and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility. Above all, we wanted to honor the generations of people whose courage and sacrifice made our freedoms possible today.”
On bringing the film to Netflix, Los Javis added, “We couldn’t imagine a better home than Netflix to bring this story to audiences across the United States. We are deeply grateful and excited that its message will reach millions of viewers and help carry Federico García Lorca’s legacy to audiences around the world. This is the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter for La Bola Negra, and we can’t wait for audiences to discover it.”
Who stars in ‘La Bola Negra’?
The cast includes Guitarricadelafuente in his acting debut, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. Los Javis co-wrote the film with Alberto Conejero. It is a Movistar Plus+ Original Film in collaboration with Suma Content Films, produced by Telefónica Audiovisual Digital and Los Esquiadores AIE.
When does ‘La Bola Negra’ premiere?
La Bola Negra opens in theaters on Nov. 6, ahead of its Netflix debut on Dec. 4.
